NEW TO BJJ?

Your first BJJ class doesn’t need to be intimidating.

You don’t need martial-arts experience, and you don’t need to get fit before starting. Your first job is to learn the basics, not keep up with the most experienced person in the room.

We demonstrate techniques before you practise with a partner. Controlled, cooperative practice gives you time to ask questions, repeat a movement and make sense of it. The coach will help you work at an appropriate pace.

You’ll learn how to tap — the signal to stop — and how to respect your partner’s tap from the beginning. Tell us when you need a break or don’t understand something. Competition is always optional.

TWO WAYS TO TRAIN

Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

BJJ is grappling: learning positions, escapes, control and submissions through practice with a partner. Both formats develop those skills, with different clothing and grips.

Gi

The traditional BJJ uniform gives you sleeves, lapels and trousers to grip. You’ll learn how those grips help with control, escapes and submissions.

Ask us about the right uniform before buying one.

No-Gi

Training without the traditional Gi changes the grips and can make grappling faster moving. Positions, escapes, control and submissions remain central.

No-Gi usually runs as part of Open Mat. A dedicated No-Gi class is planned; its start date and time will be announced. Ask which session and clothing are suitable for your first visit.

MEET YOUR COACH

Experienced coaching from your first session.

Ben Babbington

Founder / Head Instructor · Havoc Grappling

Ben founded ZKS Martial Arts in 1999 and has nearly 30 years of experience working with children, teenagers and adults. He is a 1st Degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt.

For a new member, that experience means clear explanations, help with unfamiliar movements and an appropriate pace from the first session.

Ben continues to train and compete himself. He won two silver medals at the National Masters BJJ Championships in September 2026. That experience informs his coaching; it does not make competition a requirement for members.

Competition is available if it interests you. Training for enjoyment, technique and fitness is equally welcome.

YOUR PROGRESS

BJJ belts: a journey built on practice.

You start at white belt. The main adult BJJ belt sequence is white, blue, purple, brown and black. Each stage represents continued learning and experience on the mats.

  1. WhiteStart here
  2. Blue
  3. Purple
  4. Brown
  5. Black

What do the stripes mean?

White, blue, purple and brown belts can each have up to four stripes, marking progress within a belt. Black belts have a separate degree system; the journey continues after black belt.

Progress at your own pace

Promotions recognise your development. Your instructor decides when you’re ready, so there is no promised date for your next belt. Focus on learning, regular practice and being a responsible training partner. You do not need to compete to train and progress at Havoc.

The wider BJJ grading structure also includes senior red-and-black, red-and-white and red belts. See the IBJJF graduation guide (opens in a new tab) for the full structure and age requirements. BJJ grades are separate from the ZKS Taijutsu grading system.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A BJJ CLASS?

One skill at a time.

The exact format depends on the session and the coach’s plan. Wednesday’s Skills & Drills focuses on learning and practice, with no sparring. Other taught sessions may include:

  1. Warm-up & movement

Get moving and become familiar with the positions used in training.

  2. Watch the technique

The coach demonstrates the skill and explains what to focus on.

  3. Practise with a partner

Coached drilling gives you time to repeat the movement and receive feedback.

  4. Put it into context

Positional practice helps you explore a specific situation with appropriate resistance.

  5. Live training, when appropriate

Rolling lets partners practise their skills together. Your participation will reflect your experience and the coach’s guidance.

You won’t be expected to know the terminology. Tell the instructor it’s your first class. Wear comfortable sports clothing without zips or sharp fittings, remove jewellery and bring water. Follow your BJJ booking confirmation for any session-specific kit.

Read the first-class checklist — your BJJ confirmation takes priority over general children’s trial guidance.

More about Aylesbury HQ

ALREADY PART OF ZKS?

You’ve watched from the side. Now try the mats yourself.

If you already bring your children to ZKS, you’re welcome to try BJJ too. You don’t need previous martial-arts experience — just a confirmed place in a suitable class and a willingness to learn.

Try BJJ at ZKS

BEFORE YOUR FIRST VISIT

Your BJJ questions, answered.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

BJJ is a grappling martial art. You learn to control positions, escape holds and apply submissions through technical partner practice. Havoc Grappling is the ZKS programme for BJJ in Aylesbury and Watford.

Is BJJ suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. No previous martial-arts experience is required. Tell us you’re new when you book so we can confirm a suitable session. Techniques are demonstrated before you practise, and you can ask questions throughout.

Am I too old to start BJJ?

You don’t have to start as a teenager. Adults can learn at different stages of life. Tell us about your experience, goals and any limitations so we can discuss an appropriate starting point.

Do I need to be fit before starting?

No. You can start at your current fitness level and build gradually. Take breaks when needed and let the instructor know how you’re finding the pace.

Will everyone else be much better than me?

Some partners will have more experience, but your first class is about learning the fundamentals. You are not expected to match their speed or knowledge. Ask for help whenever an exercise is unfamiliar.

Will I have to fight or compete?

Competition is optional. Wednesday’s 8pm Skills & Drills session has no sparring and is ideal for complete beginners. In other sessions, partner drills, positional practice and appropriate rolling are part of learning BJJ; they are not a demand to enter a tournament. The coach will explain what is suitable for your stage.

What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi?

Gi training uses the traditional uniform and its grips. No-Gi uses different clothing and grips. Both teach positions, escapes, control and submissions. No-Gi usually runs as part of Open Mat. A dedicated No-Gi class is planned, with its start date and time to be announced.

What should I wear — do I need a Gi?

For a first visit, follow your booking confirmation. Comfortable sports clothing without zips or sharp fittings is a useful starting point; remove jewellery and bring water. Ask us before buying a Gi so we can confirm what your session requires.

How do BJJ belts and stripes work?

The main adult belt order is white, blue, purple, brown and black. Up to four stripes can mark progress within each belt from white to brown. Your instructor decides when you are ready for promotion; there is no guaranteed timetable. See the BJJ belt guide.

How often should a beginner train BJJ?

Choose a routine you can maintain. One regular session gives you a starting point; a second can help you revisit what you’ve learned. Discuss suitable sessions and membership inclusions with the coach before adding more.

Can 16- and 17-year-olds train?

Havoc adult BJJ normally begins at 16+. Under-18 participation requires ZKS approval and the appropriate waiver. Confirm suitability and complete the under-18 arrangements before attending; an existing children’s membership does not replace them.

What if I have an old injury?

Tell ZKS before booking and tell the instructor before training. We can discuss the session and your limitations without promising every activity will be suitable. If you’re unsure whether you should take part, seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

Where are the BJJ classes in Aylesbury?

At ZKS Martial Arts HQ, 111–113 Cambridge Street, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, HP20 1BT. Find directions here.

How much does BJJ cost at ZKS?

Standard is £35 per month for one session a week; Premium is £45 for two classes a week; Elite is £55 for three classes a week. The one-off joining fee is £60, including your uniform. Membership is paid by Direct Debit. You can request a free trial before joining, subject to availability and confirmation.

Can I try BJJ before joining?

Yes. Request a free BJJ trial and wait for ZKS to confirm your place. A maximum of two trial sessions may be attended, subject to availability; membership and Direct Debit setup are required before continuing.

Do I have to be a ZKS member already?

No. New adults are welcome, whether or not anyone in your family trains at ZKS.

What if I have previous BJJ experience?

You’re welcome too. Let us know your training background and current BJJ grade so the coach can help you choose an appropriate session. A grade in another martial art does not automatically transfer to BJJ.
