Martial arts for children who do not enjoy team sports

Published: · By ZKS Martial Arts

Quick answer

Some children enjoy practising an individual skill alongside other people without a team score deciding the result. Martial arts can be an option to try, while football, rugby, gymnastics and other activities remain good choices for many families.

Individual progress within a group

In a ZKS class, a child practises skills such as movement, striking or safe falling. The instructor can give feedback about that child’s technique. Students still work with others and learn to be considerate partners, but their progress does not depend on their team winning a match.

What to compare when choosing an activity

Think about whether your child enjoys repeated practice, clear instructions and learning through movement. Also consider the group size, the instructor’s expectations and the journey to class. A preference for individual progress does not mean a child will automatically enjoy every martial arts lesson.

Try the setting, not just the label

Explain what has or has not worked in previous activities. Watch how your child feels about returning after a confirmed trial. Some may prefer a mainstream school-stage group; others may benefit from discussing Adaptive provision. ZKS considers suitability individually and does not promise to resolve behavioural or developmental difficulties.
