Simon Watts
Martial Arts Instructor
Meet Simon
ZKS Black Belt and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Purple Belt. Teaching BJJ fundamentals and supporting the children’s programme.
Biography
I began my martial arts journey in 2001, training with the Jiu Jitsu Foundation and achieving my 3rd Kyu before moving to London in 2007.
Over the following years, I broadened my experience by attending seminars in Jiu Jitsu, Judo and Aikido.
In 2014, I joined ZKS Martial Arts, where I have trained and taught ever since.
I was awarded my Brown Tag Belt in November 2017 by our head instructor, Sensei Ben Babbington, and achieved my Black Belt in July 2022.
For several years, I helped teach the children's Saturday classes in Watford, initially alongside Sensei Tim and later Sensei James.
Although increasing work commitments eventually made it difficult to continue teaching regularly on Saturdays, I remain involved in the children's programme, supporting mini-gradings/review sessions and the annual summer grading competition.
Alongside Zen Kyu Taijitsu, I began training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in September 2017, also under Ben Babbington, earning my Purple Belt in December 2024.
I particularly enjoy teaching our Sunday morning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fundamentals class, helping students develop their skills and confidence on the mats.
My favourite throw is Uki Goshi (Floating Hip Throw), and my current favourite submission is the D'Arce Choke.
Outside the dojo, I am the Deputy Headteacher of a local junior school, and I enjoy reading historical fiction.
Martial arts continues to be a central part of my life – a discipline that challenges me physically, mentally and personally every day.
