Important Update: Classes, Progress Reviews and Membership

Clear guidance to help families plan for the new training year.

September Class Moves

Some students may move class because of their school year or programme. Class changes will be updated or communicated during August, and parents should check the Members Area before the first September lesson.

Year 2 moving into Year 3

Mini Ninjas to Junior Martial Arts

Mini Ninjas to Junior MA

Junior Martial Arts gives students a more suitable class as they get older, with greater independence, stronger technical expectations and more structured development.

Year 6 moving into Year 7

Junior Martial Arts to Teen Martial Arts

Junior MA to Teen MA

Teen Martial Arts gives older students a more suitable training environment as they continue developing their discipline, confidence, technical skill and independence.

Progress Reviews and Training Expectations

Consistent training helps children develop their skills, confidence and good training habits over time.

We are renaming Mini Assessments as Progress Reviews because we want to focus on each child’s overall development, confidence, consistency and technical progress—not solely on achieving the next belt. Belt progression remains important, but it is part of a wider training journey.

In plain English: a Progress Review looks at how your child is developing across their training. It is not a promise that they will receive a new belt. If your child is eligible, ZKS will send an invitation; families then book through the Members Area.
  • Blue Belt through Purple Stripe Belt: students are expected to attend at least two lessons per week and complete a minimum of 16 sessions before they may be invited to their next Progress Review.
  • Once invited, families have two weeks to book the Progress Review.
  • Brown Belts and Brown Stripes: students are expected to attend at least three lessons per week; this supports Progress Reviews and future Black Belt grading.

Further information about Progress Reviews and Black Belt grading will be included in the September newsletter.

Final Day of Our Current Timetable

Saturday 25th July 2026 is the final day of classes on our current regular timetable.

Our normal timetable will then close during August. Training does not stop completely: we will still be running selected summer training sessions at our Aylesbury HQ, but these are separate bookable sessions and are not shown as part of each member’s normal weekly class.

August sessions must be booked separately through the Members Area. Please do not simply arrive without booking.

Our regular academic timetable will reopen on Tuesday 1st September 2026.

Summer Competition 2026

A review of the competition weekend and where to find the published results.

Our Summer Competition brought together more than 150 members across four separate competition sessions during the final weekend of our regular training year.

For many students, this was their first experience of competing. Taking part required courage, concentration and resilience, and I was extremely proud of how our members performed, supported one another and responded to both success and disappointment.

Competition is not simply about winning a medal. It gives students an opportunity to apply their Kumite and Ne-Waza skills under pressure, build confidence, practise good sportsmanship and receive useful feedback for their future training.

This was also the first time we used our new online competition tracker throughout the event. Previously, competitors were arranged and moved between groups manually on the day. Although that offered flexibility, it could make the competition harder for parents to follow and sometimes created concerns about how groups had been organised.

The new system allowed the majority of competitors to be organised using school year, grade and experience, while giving parents a clearer way to follow each competition session. Overall, the tracker worked extremely well for its first full event, and we have already identified further improvements for future competitions.

The published medal winners and competition results have now been updated. Parents can open the relevant competition time or search across all sessions using their child’s first name, surname initial or displayed competition name.

Thank you to every student who competed, every parent who supported the event and every member of the ZKS instructor and staff team who helped us deliver the competition.

Reminder

Adult Classes During August

Adult classes will run on a reduced August timetable.

There will be no adult classes from Monday 3rd August to Sunday 16th August 2026.

Sensei Tim and Sensei James will be running adult classes on:

  • Wednesday 19th August 2026
  • Wednesday 26th August 2026

Other adult classes may run during August, but these will be confirmed separately through the relevant WhatsApp groups.

Important

August Membership Payment

August membership payments will still be collected as normal.

Why the August Payment Still Applies

ZKS membership is based on the full annual training programme, with monthly payments spread evenly across the year.

The August payment remains due while the regular children’s timetable is paused because it helps keep each member’s regular class place secured for September and supports the year-round running of the academy.

Membership is not calculated according to the exact number of lessons taking place within each individual calendar month.

Please Do Not Cancel Early

If your child is continuing with ZKS Martial Arts in September, you do not need to do anything.

Please do not cancel your Direct Debit early. Our system automatically removes members when a Direct Debit is cancelled, which means the student may no longer appear on the class register and may risk losing their regular class place.

Parents with account-specific questions should contact us through the Members Area message function.

Action Required

September Timetable and Progression Expectations

The regular timetable returns on Tuesday 1st September 2026.

The class-move guidance, Progress Review expectations and recommended membership options are included in the Important Update near the top of this newsletter.

Parents should check the Members Area before their child’s first September lesson for confirmed class details and any further updates.

Information

Welcoming Sensei Dylan Back

Sensei Dylan will be supporting selected summer training and Sunday sessions in the new academic year.

It has been great to welcome Sensei Dylan back to ZKS. He will be helping to deliver selected summer training sessions and will also be returning to lead Sunday sessions during the new academic training year.

In nearly 30 years of running ZKS, one of the things I have always valued is seeing former members and members of staff return to train, teach or support the next generation.

I have always wanted ZKS to be a place where students, instructors and staff can grow in confidence, develop responsibility and continue progressing through different stages of their lives.

Further information about the Sunday sessions will be shared with the members affected.

Making ZKS Information Easier to Find

We are continuing to build the ZKS Help Centre.

I recognise that parents need to be able to find accurate information without searching through previous emails and newsletters or contacting us about questions that should be easy to answer.

We are therefore continuing to build the new ZKS Help Centre. This will bring our key guidance, procedures and answers to frequently asked questions together in one clear and accessible place.

The aim is to make ZKS easier to understand and navigate for members, parents, instructors and staff.

Need Help?

For bookings, membership changes, class questions, event questions or account support, please contact us through the Members Area so everything stays linked to your account.
