November 2026 update for parents, students and members.
Autumn Progress
November at ZKS Martial Arts
As we move further into the autumn term, there is plenty to celebrate at ZKS, from the
achievements of our adult members to the next generation of young leaders preparing to take on additional
responsibility.
We are also approaching our Winter Reviews, so November is an important time to look at
attendance, progress and the opportunities available to our members.

Prepare for December
Winter Reviews – Preparing for December
Consistent training helps members build the progress needed for future Belt Promotions.
Winter Reviews are approaching. Attendance contributes towards eligibility, but reaching the attendance
figure does not automatically mean that a member will be invited. Reviews recognise progress, and every member
develops at a different rate.

Attendance is measured against the applicable term. Parents should check their child’s attendance and
read the Help Centre guidance so they understand how Reviews fit into the wider progression pathway.

These Reviews are for Mini Ninjas, Junior MA and Teen MA members at ZKSMA HQ and Nascot Wood Junior
School. Booking remains subject to eligibility and the individual information provided through the
Members Area.
Booking deadline: Sunday 29 November 2026.
Please complete an available Winter Review booking through the Members Area by the deadline.
How to check and book a Review
Review bookings are invitation-led. Please use the correct child or member record in the Members Area and
follow the status shown there—the Members Area is the source of truth for eligibility and booking.
1. Open the member record
Sign in to the Members Area and select the child or member whose Review you want to check.
2. Check the Review status
If it says Training in progress, keep attending normal classes. Please do not try to
book before a Review becomes available.
3. Book when invited
When the status changes to Review available to book, open the booking and check the
date, venue, current fee and booking details before completing the purchase by the deadline.
4. Check the confirmation
Make sure the member record shows Review booked, then attend the separate Review
session. Reviews usually last about one hour.
After the Review, the member receives a result of Pass, Merit or Distinction, with feedback.
White Belts complete one successful Review during the training year; coloured belts complete three, earned
one at a time. For coloured belts, attendance starts again towards the next Review after each completed
Review. Completing the Review requirement supports progression but does not guarantee a Belt Promotion.
If the Review status or attendance record looks incorrect, send a message through the relevant member record
in the Members Area and wait for a response before booking.
Thirteen Teen MA members have been invited to join the next stage of our Leadership Team programme.
Thank you to everyone who applied. It was encouraging to see so many Teen MA members interested in taking on
additional responsibility and helping the next generation of martial artists. Following a review of the
applications and discussions with our instructors, 13 members have been invited to join the
programme.
We will be in contact directly. The 13 selected
members and their parents or guardians will be contacted individually to discuss and confirm their proposed
Leadership Team placement.
What Will Our Leadership Team Do?
Leadership Team members will work alongside our instructors, supporting Mini Ninjas and Junior MA classes.
They will assist with demonstrations, help younger members understand techniques, support partner work and
contribute to the smooth running of lessons. Where possible, we would like members to assist with both Mini
Ninjas and Junior MA at their allocated venue.
The programme develops confidence, communication, responsibility and coaching skills while giving younger
students positive role models. Leadership Team members will always work under the supervision of an
instructor.
Developing Our Future Instructors
This is an important part of our longer-term plans for ZKS. We want young members to develop beyond their own
martial arts training by gradually gaining experience and responsibility. For some, this could eventually
lead to paid Assistant Instructor opportunities from age 16 and potentially a longer-term coaching career.
Leadership Team participation does not replace a member’s own training. Members are expected to continue
meeting their normal weekly Teen MA commitments.
Supporting Reviews and Competitions
We also hope Leadership Team members will support instructors at Reviews, competitions and other club events.
These occasions provide valuable experience and a better understanding of how the club operates. Planned
dates are available in our Term Dates and Events Calendar.
Active Leadership Team members may choose to wear the ZKS Black Gi, helping younger students
recognise those supporting our instructors. The black gi is optional, and members may continue wearing their
existing ZKS uniform.
We are particularly interested in members who could help Sensei Dylan at Aylesbury HQ on Sunday mornings:
Mini Ninjas, 10:00–10:45am, followed by Junior MA,
11:00–11:45am. We hope some newly invited members will consider adding Sunday to their
regular commitment.
Looking Ahead
New members will begin an introductory period after October half term, running through to Christmas. During
this time, instructors will support their development and help them settle into their new responsibilities.
Congratulations once again to everyone invited. We look forward to seeing our young leaders
grow in confidence and become an important part of the future of ZKS Martial Arts.
Celebrating Our Adult Members
Havoc Grappling – Celebrating Our BJJ Belt Promotions
Recognising the commitment, hard work and progress of our adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu members.
On Thursday 22 October, we held a special Havoc Grappling Belt Promotion Evening to
present belts and stripes to our members.
Kevin Capel was unfortunately unable to join us because he was unwell. We wish Kevin a
speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming him to ZKS in the future.
It was a great opportunity to recognise the commitment, hard work and progress of everyone who trains
with us.
Congratulations to Our Members!
The carousel celebrates every member who received a new belt or stripe during the evening.

Why Are BJJ Belt Promotions Such a Big Achievement?
For anyone unfamiliar with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), the grading process is quite different from many
traditional martial arts.
BJJ has just five main adult belt colours: White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black. Members can
also earn up to four stripes on each belt to recognise their progress along the way.
Unlike our children’s martial arts programmes, where Reviews and Belt Promotions take place at set
times during the training year, BJJ progression is a much longer journey. It commonly takes around 10
years of consistent training to reach Black Belt, although everyone’s journey is different.
Promotions are not simply awarded for turning up to classes. Attendance and consistency are important, but we
also consider technical knowledge, practical ability, improvement and how members apply their skills when
training with others.
In BJJ, there is no hiding behind a belt. Ability is regularly tested through training with other people,
making each promotion a genuine recognition of the skills a member has developed.
Reaching Blue Belt is already a significant achievement. Purple Belt represents years of experience and a
much deeper understanding of the art, while Brown Belt is an advanced grade and an important milestone on the
journey towards Black Belt.
More Than Just Belts
What makes Havoc special is not simply the grades. It is the people, the friendships and the willingness of
our members to help one another improve.
Some train once a week and others several times, but everyone contributes to the atmosphere we are building.
I am incredibly proud of how far our adult BJJ programme has come, and the promotion evening gave us an
opportunity to celebrate that progress together.
Congratulations to everyone who received a belt or stripe.
You have earned that recognition, and I look forward to seeing where your BJJ
journey takes you next.

Training Pathways
Your Martial Arts Journey Doesn’t End at 16
Older teenagers and adults can continue developing through complementary training options.
Adult Taijutsu
Adult Taijutsu continues the wider ZKS martial arts pathway, with an emphasis on traditional techniques,
practical self-defence, movement and control. It develops technical understanding and confidence and can
be a natural progression opportunity for older Teen MA members.
Havoc Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Havoc Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a separate martial arts discipline focused on grappling, positional control,
ground techniques and submissions. It is suitable for recreational training and technical development;
competition is optional. Students begin their BJJ grading journey at white belt.
Taijutsu and BJJ develop different but complementary skills. Neither is presented as
better than the other, and eligible members are welcome to explore which adult training pathway suits their
interests.
For younger members
Adult sessions are not automatically open to every member under 16. Where an
opportunity is suitable, instructor approval and any necessary arrangements must be in place before
attending.
Wednesdays · 8:00–9:00pm
Wednesday Skills & Drills – Aylesbury
A technical Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu session at ZKS Aylesbury HQ.
This session focuses on learning techniques and practising movements in a supportive setting. There is
no sparring, making it a useful introduction for adults and eligible Year 11 members who are
curious about BJJ or want to develop their technical confidence.
Interested members should message ZKS through the Members Area chat before attending. Eligibility and any
necessary arrangements can then be confirmed individually.
Thank you for taking part in our Parent Open Day events in Aylesbury and Watford.
Parents play an important part in supporting their children’s training. These events offer a chance to
experience part of a class and gain a better understanding of what children are learning on the mats.
Thank you for getting involved and for the encouragement you continue to give your children.
Please Check Regularly
Keeping in Touch – Please Check Your Members Area Messages
Individual communication, class arrangements and membership updates are kept together in the Members
Area.
At ZKS, we use the Members Area for individual communication with parents, including class arrangements,
membership matters and important updates about your child’s training.
When we send you a message, you should receive an email notification asking you to log in. However, we know
that emails can sometimes end up in junk folders or be missed altogether.
Please make a habit of checking your Members Area messages regularly and responding promptly when a reply is
needed.
For particularly important or time-sensitive matters, we may also send an SMS asking you to log in and read
your message.
Using the Members Area keeps our conversations together, makes it easier to follow up on enquiries and helps
us maintain an accurate record of communication.
Find guidance about membership, training, Reviews and progress, class changes and common parent
enquiries. Please continue to use Members Area chat for questions about an individual account or member.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support and for the encouragement you give our members.
It’s rewarding to see students developing at every stage of their training, whether they’re
preparing for their first Review, stepping into a leadership role or achieving another milestone in their
adult martial arts journey.
I look forward to seeing everyone in class.
